10 things a Wikitravel writer should pay attention to

I think that Wikitravel has a lot of rules to abide by. It does not seem as if it would be overwhelming to follow, it just means that you must pay attention to detail and edit your posts multiple times before officially submitting. I like the fact that Wikitravel tries to control the use of biased opinions does not allow for long vague descriptions leading to points. It seems as if they want information that is cut and dry and gets to the point without a lengthy introduction. I think for the me the markup is going to be hard to follow simply because I am not used to writing in electronic environments as it is. I am confident that if I simply familiarize myself with the rules and stay attentive to my writing, I will have no problem conforming to Wikitravel’s style of writing. Below I have provided a list that readers should use to help prevent errors when using Wikitravel: 1. As a Wiki writer you must be sure to follow the mark up to make sure you follow the uniform outline that they want to maintain. 2. Make sure you can be as concise as possible but also do not go into a tremendous amount of detail trying to accomplish that. 3. Do not make assumptions as to the reader’s intelligence or understanding. Making assumptions only inhibits your credibility and makes the reader disinterested. 4. Do not try and sugar coat ideas and be nice about things. This fits into the idea of being concise especially when conveying feedback as to certain aspects of destination. It is not necessarily being nice if you do not give an honest opinion. 5. Make sure you maintain a neutral point of view when giving feedback in order to maintain credibility. 6. Don’t think of this as promoting other peoples businesses. You are simply giving advice. 7. Be very careful of the words you choose. Make sure that you aren’t using unnecessary fillers to bring about a point, simply state it. 8. Over repetition can be overwhelming and basically means your stating the obvious. Be wary of the No Advice from Captain Obvious aspect of Wikitravel. 9. It can be confusing to remember all of the rules for Wikitravel’s markup, especially the numbers and brackets. You must pay attention to detail. 10. Don’t be one sided. Give your opinion but do not try to influence other people’s choices upon the choice you would make.
